Do we Frustrate People in Sunday School?

Today,  I received a notice to refill a subscription.  They suggested that I renew online.  Being a computer savvy person,  I proceeded to register and set up my online account.  It doesn’t work…so a call to the support line is in order.  Supposedly, the registration is complete and working, however, the login still doesn’t work.  You place the e-mail address and password in and get that nasty message, the login or password is incorrect.  You have no idea why it is not working.  Frustration.

As Sunday School and church leaders, frustration surely never happens on Sunday morning or during Sunday School.    In my experience traveling around the state of TN and visiting lots of churches, I have had my share of frustrating experiences.  Recently, I was on my way to a consultation to a church.  My GPS says takes me to the proper address, but there is no church.   The community had re-done the roads…a sign would sure have been nice, stating the church is this way.

Another time, I was completing a TBC assignment to a church in East Tennessee with my younger children.  Arrived at a church in time for Sunday School and saw three entrances.  It was evident that one was the sanctuary entrance, but a group of man were standing outside another entrance.  As I approached the men, I asked, “can one of you help us find the children Sunday School class?”  They let me know that if I entered here, someone would help me.  After wandering the halls, we finally found someone to help.  Wouldn’t it have been nice if one of the man outside would have cared enough to escort us and help us.  Luckily, we were just visiting for the convention…If I had been lost and unchurched, I would have looked for a more friendly church.

I remember looking for a church in a new town.  We arrived on Sunday morning but quickly found that my daughters class had decided to go to McDonalds that morning.  I guess they didn’t plan for guests.

A few months ago, I was visiting a church in West TN.  The welcome center insisted on taking me to a Man’s class.  The man were mostly in their 60’s.  I texted my wife…I am stuck in a boring Sunday School class that I don’t belong in.  The teacher was sincere and knowlegable but I hate lectures.  When we take people to the wrong class, they may never give us another chance.

Frustration!!! We need to do everything that we can to make a great first impression and not frustrate our guests..
